How to Become an RFID Engineer in India: Skills, Tools and Career Path

posted on: 16 Oct, 2026 | 01:18:54 PM by Indian RFID

As Indian retailers, jewellers, manufacturers and logistics companies adopt RFID, demand is growing for people who can make it work in the real world. An RFID engineer chooses the right tags, sets up readers and antennas, encodes data, integrates software and proves that the system reads reliably. Here is a practical path into the field.

1. Understand the physics - without a PhD

You need to know how passive tags harvest energy, why UHF behaves differently from HF and NFC, and why metal and liquids detune tags. The free Indian RFID Academy covers this in plain language with diagrams - start with how RFID works and RFID frequencies.

2. Know the hardware

  • Tags and inlays - labels, hard tags, on-metal tags, jewellery tags, laundry tags, cards and wristbands
  • Readers - fixed multi-port readers, handhelds and integrated readers
  • Antennas - gain, polarisation, beam width, cabling and portal design
  • RFID printers and encoders - print, encode and verify in one pass

3. Learn data and encoding

Employers expect you to understand tag memory banks, EPC / GS1 SGTIN-96 and SSCC encoding, TID, locking and passwords. You should be able to encode a label correctly, verify it and explain why a duplicate EPC is a problem.

4. Learn integration

RFID is only useful when its data reaches a business system. Learn how middleware filters reads into events, and the basics of APIs, LLRP and MQTT, so you can talk confidently with ERP, WMS and software teams.

5. Do real projects

The fastest way to credibility is a portfolio: a tag-testing report, a dock-door portal set-up, a jewellery tray audit, a library or asset-tracking pilot. Our step-by-step guides for jewellery stores and warehouses show exactly how projects are run.

6. Get certified with hands-on labs

The Indian RFID Certified RFID Specialist course packs all of the above into one month of live online classes (with a practical session in New Delhi if needed) - ending with a capstone project and certificate. The next batch starts on 12 January 2027.

Where RFID engineers work

System integrators, RFID and barcode companies, retail and apparel groups, jewellery chains, 3PL warehouses, manufacturers, hospitals, smart-city and toll projects, and software companies building inventory platforms. Experienced professionals can also join Indian RFID as trainers, consultants or freelancers.
