An RFID inlay is the heart of every RFID tag: a tiny chip bonded to an antenna on a thin film. The inlay you choose decides how far, how fast and how reliably your tags read. Dry inlay, wet inlay and paper-face labels

• Dry inlay - chip and antenna on PET film with no adhesive; inserted into hang tags, cards and laminated products.
• Wet inlay - the same inlay with adhesive, ready to stick on cartons, products or inside labels.
• Paper-face RFID label - a wet inlay converted into a printable label for thermal-transfer RFID printers.

Key choices

• Chip: current-generation UHF chips (for example Impinj M700/M800 series and NXP UCODE 8/9) give better sensitivity and faster encoding. Some retailers specify the chip family - always check the programme specification.
• Antenna size and shape: larger antennas read further; small or narrow antennas suit jewellery, care labels and small items.
• Frequency band: India, Russia and Europe use the 865-868 MHz UHF band; global inlays are tuned to work across regions.
• Material: metal and liquids detune tags - use on-metal tags or spacer designs for tools, cans and electronics.
• Encoding: GS1 SGTIN-96 for retail items, SSCC-96 for cartons and pallets, GRAI / GIAI for returnable and fixed assets.
