Most discussion of RFID in solar focuses on the module factory, where an RFID label inside the laminate carries the module's identity. But the label's value continues long after the module leaves the factory. For independent power producers, EPC contractors and operations and maintenance (O&M) teams, those labels can make field work faster and records more reliable over the plant's long life. This article looks at RFID from the plant side.
A utility-scale plant may contain a very large number of modules, each with a serial number. Serial numbers matter for warranty claims, insurance, performance analysis and audits. Yet the printed serial label on the back of a module is hard to reach once the module is mounted, may fade over years of sun exposure, and requires someone to crawl under the structure to read it.
As a result, many plants rely on installation records that may be incomplete or never updated after replacements.
When modules carry an RFID label - typically UHF, embedded or applied by the manufacturer - a technician with a handheld reader can capture the module identity without reading the printed label. Practical uses include:
Doing this during installation is far easier than retrofitting the data later.
Solar structures are metal, and modules have aluminium frames and glass fronts. Tag position and the reader's power setting determine how reliably a module can be read without picking up neighbouring modules. A focused, short-range read is often preferable when mapping positions, while a broader read is fine for counting spares. Test the reading technique on site before a large survey.
Plant conditions are tough: heat, dust, glare and long walking distances. Rugged UHF handhelds with good batteries, sunlight-readable screens and sturdy grips are essential. Seuic UHF RFID handhelds and rugged Android devices are suitable options; see our Seuic page for models.
RFID data is most valuable when it feeds the plant's asset management or computerised maintenance system. Linking module serials to locations and to maintenance tickets means that when a string underperforms, the team knows exactly which modules are involved and their history.
Older plants or modules without RFID can still benefit. Durable UHF or barcode labels designed for outdoor exposure can be applied to the frame or structure at each position, giving a reliable identifier for audits even if the module itself is unlabelled. Choose label materials rated for outdoor UV and temperature extremes.
Indian RFID supplies solar PV module RFID labels for manufacturers, and handheld readers and software for plant-side applications. Mindware also supplies durable barcode labels and ribbons for outdoor marking.
