Datalogic offers a wide range of barcode scanners, and the product names can be confusing at first. The good news is that the range is organised into families, each aimed at a type of work. Once you know the families, choosing a model is mostly a matter of picking corded or cordless and the right options. As an authorised Datalogic dealer, Mindware helps customers make this choice every day; here is the overview we share.
The QuickScan family covers entry-level and general-purpose handheld scanners in 1D and 2D versions, corded and cordless. Models such as the QuickScan QD2500 and QBT2500 suit small shops, pharmacies, billing counters and offices where the scanner is used regularly but not abused. A stand allows hands-free use at the counter.
Choose QuickScan when you need a dependable scanner at a sensible price for a normal counter or desk environment.
The Gryphon family is a step up in performance and build quality. Gryphon 4500-series models, available corded and cordless, offer fast 2D reading, good reading of codes on phone screens, and features suited to busy retail, healthcare and light logistics. Some cordless models offer a choice of radio technologies and a charging base.
Choose Gryphon when scanning volume is high, codes are sometimes poor quality, or you want a scanner that will last for years of daily use.
Heron scanners are designed for boutiques and fashion stores where the counter is part of the brand experience. They combine 2D reading with a more stylish look.
Magellan covers on-counter presentation scanners and multi-plane bioptic scanners built into supermarket checkouts. Bioptic models read items passed across them from many angles, which speeds up high-volume grocery checkout. Presentation models suit counters where customers show a phone or items are passed in front of the scanner.
Choose Magellan when throughput at the checkout is the priority.
PowerScan scanners are built for warehouses, manufacturing and logistics. They are designed to withstand drops, dust and water, and come in corded and cordless versions, including long-range and DPM (direct part marking) variants. The PowerScan 9600 range also includes models with UHF RFID reading alongside barcode scanning, useful in sites moving gradually to RFID.
Choose PowerScan when scanners will be dropped, used with gloves, exposed to dust or used to read labels at a distance.
The Matrix family is mounted on conveyors and production lines to read codes automatically as items pass. Matrix 120, 220 and 320 cover a range of field-of-view and performance needs, from compact installations to more demanding lines.
Choose Matrix when codes should be read automatically without an operator, for example in packaging lines or sortation.
Where operators need a screen, keypad or Wi-Fi connectivity, Datalogic mobile computers such as the Memor and Skorpio families combine scanning with an Android computer. The Joya Touch 22 is designed for retail tasks including self-shopping. See our mobile computers page for current models.
