Russia's national product marking system, Chestny ZNAK (often translated as "Honest Sign"), requires many categories of goods - including apparel, footwear and a growing list of other products - to carry a unique DataMatrix code before they can be sold. For Indian exporters, the practical question is not the regulation itself but the workflow: who generates the codes, who prints them, and how do you make sure every item gets the right one?
This article is a practical guide for suppliers. Rules and product categories change over time, so always confirm current requirements with your importer.
Who is responsible for what
The marking codes are not something an Indian supplier can create on its own. In a typical import arrangement:
- The Russian importer is registered in the marking system and describes the goods (product cards with GTINs and attributes).
- The importer orders marking codes for the required quantity of each product from the system.
- The codes, issued to the importer, are passed to the supplier or to a label printer authorised by the importer, usually as data files.
- The supplier ensures each code is printed as a DataMatrix label and applied to the correct item before shipment.
- After import, the importer completes the remaining reporting in the system.
Your role is to print accurately, apply correctly and keep records. The data must be used exactly as received.
What is inside the code
The Chestny ZNAK code is a GS1 DataMatrix. It contains the product's GTIN, a unique serial number, and a verification (crypto) element generated by the system. Because the crypto element is unique to each code, codes cannot be guessed, copied from one item to another or regenerated. If a label is lost or damaged, you need a replacement code from the importer - you cannot simply reprint a different one.
Printing requirements in practice
- Print quality - DataMatrix codes must be crisp and correctly sized. Use a thermal transfer printer at 300 dpi or higher for small codes, with the right ribbon and label combination.
- Data integrity - the code string includes special group separator characters. Printing software must pass the data through without stripping or altering them, or the code will not validate.
- Human-readable text - the importer may ask for GTIN, serial or product details printed alongside the code.
- Durability - labels must survive transit and handling. For garments, labels are commonly applied to hang tags or sewn-in labels, depending on the importer's instructions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Wrong code on wrong SKU. Each code belongs to a specific GTIN, which includes size and colour. Mixing up sizes is the most frequent error.
- Duplicate printing. Printing the same code twice creates two items with one identity. Track every code as printed and applied.
- Unverified print quality. A code that looks fine to the eye may not scan reliably. Verify samples with a 2D scanner, and ideally a verifier, before bulk printing.
- Lost reconciliation. Keep a record of which codes were used, damaged or returned, so the importer can account for them.
A workflow that works
- Receive the code file from the importer and check quantities against the purchase order per SKU.
- Print labels in batches by SKU, with clear batch headers.
- Scan-verify a sample from each batch - or every label if volumes allow.
- Apply labels at the packing stage, then scan each item into its carton to create a packing record.
- Share the packing record with the importer along with shipping documents.
Where RFID fits
Some Russian and European buyers also ask for RFID tags alongside DataMatrix. The two can coexist on one hang tag, with the DataMatrix printed and the RFID inlay encoded from the same order data. RFID makes carton-level counting faster; DataMatrix satisfies the marking requirement.
How Mindware and Indian RFID help
We print DataMatrix labels, including for Chestny ZNAK, using codes issued to the importer, and supply the printers, Mynds ribbons and 2D scanners needed to do it in-house. Read more on our Russia and Europe exporters and importers page.
